Inspired by dogs, the gold standard in explosive detection, Fido screens packages, shipping containers, vehicles, and people for traces of nitroaromatic explosives. Fido is based on a unique chemical sensing material known as Amplifying Fluorescent Polymer (AFP). In the absence of explosive compounds, the polymer fluoresces when exposed to light of the correct wavelength. When molecules of interest are present, the brightness of the fluorescence is dramatically reduced. The drop in fluorescence intensity is then detected by a sensitive photo-detector and processed by the instrument. In side-by-side field operations, the performance of Fido is comparable to dogs. Fido can detect explosive vapor at levels as low as a few femtograms. This means the sensor is a thousand times more sensitive than any of its nearest competitors. In other words, the Fido senses danger better than anything. The extreme sensitivity of Fido enables detection of trace levels of explosives even when the target contains less than detonation quantities. This level of sensitivity can also help identify suspects who may not have the explosive device in their possession, but have been involved in previous activities in which they manufactured or handled a device. Fido is available in two models. The Fido X offers an integrated head which allows for easy portability, storage, and usage on bench tops and in storage and mail rooms. The Fido XT model with tethered head and pistol grip can be easily adapted for use on remote vehicles for standoff applications such as IED detection. Other uses include manual searches and direct screening.
