    The XMX/2L-MIL Aerosol Collector (DTBD117)

    The XMX/2L-MIL Aerosol Collector
    View Spec Print-Ready Version

    XMX Bio-aerosol Collectors
Aerosol Concentrator (XMX/2A) /Liquid Sample Collector (XMX/2AL) / Liquid Sample Collector for Outdoor Use (XMX/2AL-MIL)

The XMX Virtual Impactor is an aerosol concentrator/liquid sample collector. As an aerosol concentrator (XMX/2A), the XMX samples large volumes of air (up to 850 L/min) and concentrates the air stream for output into a variety of particle sizing instruments. The XMX operates as a three-stage concentrator and collects particles ranging in size from sub-microns to greater than 10 microns, depending on the configuration.

Designed as a modular device, the XMX/2A can be coupled with the Liquid Impingement Module (XMX/2AL) to provide concentrated liquid samples for chemical assay, microscopic analysis, growth culture analysis, or immunoassay. In this configuration, the XMX directs a particle enriched flow stream into a sample collector vial containing a specified volume of liquid.

The XMX/2L-MIL is a liquid sample collector, intended for outdoor use. All switches and connectors are NEMA-3 rated and the unit has been powder coated with an olive drab color to reduce visibility. Other specifications are identical to the XMX/2A and XMX/2AL combination.

    Rapid, Efficient Aerosol Collection
The XMX Bio-aerosol Collector is a vital instrument if your organization requires the rapid collection of any aerosol efficiently, without modifying the sample. The XMX is proven in field trials by the U.S., Canadian, and British Armed Forces.

Following is technical information for the XMX/2L-MIL. This unit was designed and built in response to the need for a weatherproof (NEMA-3), outdoor aerosol collector. It has been sold in the past year to the U.S. Air force as well as to other organizations around the world.

The XMX/2L-MIL is an aerosol separator, sample preparation, and high mass flow concentrator system, design to operate under harsh field conditions. This system was designed to process and collect large concentrations of aerosols in the respirable range (1 to 10 microns in diameter) in relatively short periods of time, i.e., when the cloud is over the XMX. This system collects 800 liters of air per minute, strips away all of the large dust particles (greater than 10 microns) and all of the very small micro debris (less than 1 micron) and concentrates the aerosols between 1 and 10 microns. The particles are then impinged into a sample collection vial (centrifuge tube) containing customer specified liquid (normally type 1, sterile water or phosphate buffered saline). Once the sample is collected, the user removes the centrifuge tube for subsequent analysis (immuno-assay, PCR, culturing). One of the primary issues in bioaerosol detection is the fact that, one cannot obtain enough sample of interest to detect an airborne threat concentration that is lethal to humans. Our system processes 800 liters of air in one minute, cleans it up, and prepares a small aqueous aliquot, to minimize dilution, for detection, all simultaneously.

Additionally, our XMX system is designed to operate under field conditions, while wearing MOPP gear. There is superior system reliability, only one moving part, the blower motor, which reduces maintenance and ensures a low MTBF. The XMX system is quick and easy to setup and tear down to minimize training and improper or incorrect usage. The internal separator and collector components are easily disassembled and constructed of nickel plated, lightweight aluminum to facilitate decontamination with various decontamination solutions, while maintaining part durability. This feature minimizes operator effort to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination between collection missions. This system comes with a high-strength transport container for increased mobility and portability (one person).

I would like to highlight two particular options. We have developed a dry filter that replaces the liquid vial. The particles, rather than impinging into water, are impacted into the dry filter which is then removed and dissolved in liquid for further analysis. The filter adapter is shown as an option below, and the filter cartridges are COTS and are readily available. Depending on your application, a dry filter may be advantageous.

Secondly, the minimum ambient air temperature for operating the XMX Liquid Collector is 0°C, since water freezes below that point. There are also humidity concerns, with the air condensing and freezing to the walls of the XMX at low temperatures, with high relative humidity. We have developed a heater for the air concentrator portion of the XMX, which heats the incoming air and increases the operational capability of the XMX to -10°C, if used in conjunction with the dry filter adapter. I realize that the temperatures in California do not normally decline to this level, however I wanted to let you know that it is available.
