Collective NBC Protection (TI5DE)

The aim of collective NBC protection is to reduce the actions of the personnel wearing complete personal NBC protection equipment to a minimum, to keep personnel losses as low as possible, to maintain parts of the troops fit for action, and to set the basis for the continuation of the military objectives. Collective NBC protection can only be effective if it works universally against the main components of NBC weapons.
Concerning the structure of collective NBC protection, the following three categories can be mentioned:
Collective NBC Protection- Collective NBC protection of tanks, vehicles etc.
- Collective NBC protection of infrastructure (combat/combat command plants, depots)
- Transportable systems with integrated NBC protection (shelters/tents)
Collective NBC Protection of Tanks, Vehicles, etc.
On the basis of the technical/military concept of the Defence material, collective NBC protection becomes effective by- armour plating which can be reinforced in case of need,
- NBC protected ventilation with filter system
- In ships the containment system is used (acc. to their size), meaning that the collective NBC protection is enhanced by sealing the compartments towards each other.
Collective NBC Protection of Infrastructure
Independent from the constructional conception of the infrastructural plant (over/under/partially under ground construction or tunnel), protection can be realized by (special) construction of the outer walls or dimensioning of the earth cover, whereas the NBC protective ventilation - incl. possibility of air-conditioning - can be provided by large-size NBC protection ventilation plants with respective filter systems.
Apart from this, the following constructional measures should be taken into account for long-term operation of a plant:- decontamination facilities in the entrance area,
- sanitary facilities,
- supply facilities,
- rest-rooms, etc.
Transportable Systems (Shelters/Tents)
Transportable systems (shelters/tents), which are equipped with NBC protection ventilation, do not protect against the direct effects of weapons and effects such as gamma radiation, thermal radiation and pressure waves resulting from nuclear detonations. However, such plants can offer reliable protection against gaseous chemical warfare agents or other contaminants in the air when they are equipped with NBC protection ventilation systems (this does not require great effort or financial funds). Therefore they present a suitable alternative to NBC protection of mobile facilities (e.g. mobile field hospitals) or collective NBC protection systems that can be set up within a short period of time.
