    NBR Protection Decontamination (TI4P)

    NBR Protection Decontamination
    Print-Ready Version

The aim of thorough decontamination is to eliminate chemical and biological (bacteriological) warfare agents and radioactive particles from the surfaces of different objects or to render them harmless, in order to avoid a direct or indirect contamination of the personnel to enable them to continue their missions without wearing individual NBC protection equipment.

By appropriate and quick use of decontamination devices and agents, contaminants (radioactive, biological, chemical contaminants) can be removed from persons, clothing, material and - with less priority - infrastructure and terrain, or reduced to a harmless level.

In principle, the decontamination methods and agents to be used depend on the kind of contamination.

For the realization of this task special water treatment plants are required.
Highly sophisticated decontamination devices and systems can be universally used for radioactive decontamination (N decontamination), disinfection (B decontamination) and detoxification (C decontamination).

    NBC Decontamination

    • Radioactive Decontamination - means the elimination of radioactive particles adhering to the surface (fall-out). The most effective way of radioactive decontamination is the hot-foam method.

    • Biological Decontamination - means rendering bacteriological (biological) warfare agents (disease causing agents) harmless. Highly effective disinfection solutions are suitable for carrying out this task.

    • Chemical Decontamination - means the elimination or destruction of chemical warfare agents.

Highest efficiency is reached with detoxification emulsions working universally against all known warfare agents.

    Organization

For security reasons, strict observation of the main wind direction is necessary for setting up a decontamination site, in order to reliably avoid a possible recontamination of personnel and material.

All devices used for decontamination must be resistant to decontamination solutions.

Apart from this, high-capacity decontamination devices must be designed so that they:
    • can suck water on their own or be connected to a central water supply

    • can release water and decontamination solutions under pressure

    • are able to heat water

    • can be combined with each other in order to form a system

    • can be installed on vehicles or in containers.

Decontamination Devices can be divided into the following groups:
    • decontamination devices installed in/on every vehicle for immediate/auxiliary decontamination (with means available on board, e.g. hot-foam decontamination)

    • universally usable decontamination devices or modules for special decontamination tasks or integrated in other decontamination systems in combination with other devices.

Decontamination Modules are the basis for modular decontamination systems and include the following groups:
    • decontamination modules for pre-treatment

    • decontamination modules for main-treatment

    • decontamination modules for post-treatment

Decontamination Systems can be classified as follows:
    • decontamination systems installed on trailers

    • decontamination systems installed on off-road vehicles

    • container-based decontamination systems

    Decontamination Agents (Chemicals)

Decontamination agents must ensure the reliable elimination of an expected contamination after an attack with NBC weapons. They must be easy to produce and easy to procure, fulfill the logistical requirements and be as harmless as possible to the environment. Depending on the kind of contamination (radioactive, biological, chemical contamination), specific decontamination agents and methods are necessary for fulfilling the a.m. requirements effectively.
